What is Discord?
Discord is a free messaging platform that lets people communicate through text, voice, and video. It was originally popular with gamers, but today it’s used by students, communities, study groups, clubs, and even professional teams. Check out Choosing a Meeting Tool.
Think of Discord as a mix between a group chat app (like WhatsApp), a forum, and a voice/video meeting tool. Everything is organized into spaces called servers, which can contain multiple channels for different topics.
Key Features of Discord
- Text Chat: Send messages in organized channels (e.g., #general, #projects, #help).
- Voice Channels: Join live audio conversations instantly—no need to “call.”
- Video Calls: Turn on your camera or share your screen.
- Servers: Communities or groups where all conversations are organized.
- Direct Messages: Private one-on-one or small group chats.

Final Thoughts
Discord is a powerful and flexible communication tool. At first, the idea of servers and channels
may feel a bit different, but once you get used to it, it becomes a very natural way to stay connected.
A Brief History of Discord
Discord was released in May 2015 as a communication platform originally designed for gamers. At the time, many gamers used a mix of tools for chat and voice communication, and Discord brought these features together into one simple platform.
Over time, Discord expanded beyond gaming and is now used by students, communities, clubs, and professional groups. Its combination of text, voice, and video—along with its username-based system—has made it a flexible tool for many different types of communication.
In the next post, we’ll look at how to use Discord for direct messaging, voice calls, and video chats with friends.
