Choosing a Messaging Tool

Choosing a Messaging Tool

There are many ways to communicate online, and it can be confusing to decide which tool to use. Three popular options — WhatsApp, Discord, and Google Meet—each take a different approach. I have found that learning technologies is not too difficult if you are motivated and set aside the time, however, navigating and choosing between technologies is not so easy. That’s why I present this blog.

Three Common Approaches

When to Use Each One

  • WhatsApp: Best for messaging people you already know and have in your contacts
  • Discord: Best for flexible communication without sharing personal contact information
  • Google Meet: Best for scheduled meetings, classes, or professional conversations

Simple Way to Think About It

Each tool is built around a different idea:

  • WhatsApp: “I have your phone number”
  • Discord: “I have your username”
  • Google Meet: “I have a meeting link”

Thinking About It Conceptually

These tools are built around different ways of connecting people.

  • Identity-based: You connect using who someone is (phone number or username)
  • Access-based: You connect using a shared entry point (a meeting link)

WhatsApp and Discord are identity-based—you connect directly to a person.
Google Meet is access-based—you join a shared space.

This simple distinction can help you choose the right tool depending on your situation.

Final Thoughts

There is no single “best” messaging tool. The right choice depends on your situation, your privacy preferences, and how you want to connect with others.
