Excel Table Names

This entry is part 2 of 5 in the series Excel Tables

What are some of the best practices for naming your tables in Microsoft Excel? The website Excel Campus has a short video on this topic. Have a look at the article called Best Practices for Naming Excel Tables.

In John’s opinion, the best practice would be to prefix all of your tables with something like tbl or t_. You could name all of your ranges with an rng prefix. Why? This helps the Excel developer. For example, if you are writing a VLOOKUP formula and you are including a table, you can start typing the prefix, and all of the tables with be shown in alphabetical order. You can easily find them all and use the arrow keys to go up and down the list and the Tab key to select the table you want. This is particularly helpful the more table you have.

Another place where the prefix comes in handy is the name box. It sorts in alphabetical order, thereby keeping all of your tables together in the list.

There is also a VBA macro that renames all of your tables by adding a prefix of your choice.
