WhatsApp Instead of Zoom

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series WhatsApp

When would you choose WatsApp over Zoom? Let’s talk about messages and calls.

Using WhatsApp: Messages, Calls, and When to Use It Instead of Zoom

In the previous post, we installed WhatsApp. Now let’s look at how to use it for everyday communication, and when it makes more sense to use WhatsApp instead of a tool like Zoom.

Sending a Message

Sending a message is similar to texting:

  • Open WhatsApp
  • Select a contact
  • Type your message in the text box
  • Tap the send button

Messages are sent over the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data), not through your carrier’s SMS system.

Sending Photos and Files

You can send photos, videos, and documents directly in a chat:

  • Open a conversation
  • Tap the paperclip (Android) or + icon (iPhone)
  • Select the file or photo you want to send

This makes WhatsApp useful for quickly sharing information without email.

Voice Messages

Instead of typing, you can record a voice message:

  • Press and hold the microphone icon
  • Speak your message
  • Release to send

This is commonly used when typing is inconvenient or when you want to add tone to your message.

Voice and Video Calls

WhatsApp supports both voice and video calls:

  • Open a chat
  • Tap the phone icon for a voice call
  • Tap the camera icon for a video call

Calls connect directly using your internet connection. No meeting links or setup are required.

Creating a Group Chat

To create a group:

  • Tap “New Chat”
  • Select “New Group”
  • Add participants

Groups are useful for coordinating with multiple people in one place.

WhatsApp vs Zoom

Both WhatsApp and Zoom support video calls, but they are designed for different use cases.

When to Use WhatsApp

  • One-on-one conversations
  • Quick, unscheduled calls
  • Mobile-first communication
  • Situations where simplicity matters

WhatsApp behaves like a direct call to a contact. You open the app and connect immediately.

When to Use Zoom

  • Meetings with multiple participants
  • Scheduled calls
  • Screen sharing or presentations
  • More structured discussions

Zoom is better suited for formal meetings and collaboration scenarios.

Summary

Use WhatsApp for quick, direct communication. Use Zoom for structured meetings and group interactions.

In the next post, we’ll look at basic privacy settings and tips for using WhatsApp safely.
