SMART Objectives by Peter Drucker


When developing a website for a client, consider making a careful plan first. Peter Drucker in his 1954 book The Practice of Management outlined Management by Objectives and said that managers need to set objectives for employees in the organization and set objectives for the organization as a whole. Employee objectives need to fit with the organization. They need to be monitored and evaluated.

Peter Drucker introduced the SMART method for evaluating the effectiveness of goals. The website Value Based Management lists what SMART stands for.

  • S – specific, significant, stretching
  • M – measurable, meaningful, motivational
  • A – agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented
  • R – realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented
  • T – time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable, traceable

Questions can be SMART as well.

  • S – specific
  • M – measurable
  • A – action-oriented
  • R – relevant
  • T – time-bound

Your questions should be fair. They should not create or reinforce bias.
