How to Add Claude AI to Your Desktop — Quick and Easy
If you’re using Claude regularly, it makes sense to have it one click away rather than typing in a URL every time. Here’s how to add a Claude desktop icon on Windows 11, including a clean app-style option that’s great for less tech-savvy users.
The Easiest Method — Microsoft Edge
If you’re using Edge, this is the slickest option. It installs Claude almost like a standalone app, opening in its own clean window without all the usual browser tabs and toolbars around it.
- Open Microsoft Edge and go to claude.ai
- Click the three dots menu in the top right corner
- Select More tools
- Select Apps
- Click Install Claude
That’s it — a desktop icon is created automatically. When you click it, Claude opens in its own window without the full browser interface around it, which makes it feel much cleaner and less cluttered.
Using Chrome Instead?
Chrome has a similar option, just worded slightly differently:
- Go to claude.ai in Chrome
- Click the three dots menu top right
- Go to Save and share
- Click Create shortcut
- Tick Open as window for the cleaner app-style experience
- Click Create
The Manual Shortcut Method — Works on Any Browser
If neither of the above works for you, this method works regardless of which browser you use:
- Right-click on an empty spot on your desktop
- Select New → Shortcut
- Type https://claude.ai as the location
- Click Next
- Name it something like Claude AI
- Click Finish
This creates a standard browser shortcut that takes you straight to Claude when you double-click it.
There’s Also a Desktop App
Anthropic also offers an official Claude desktop app for Windows. This installs like any normal application and puts an icon on your desktop automatically — no browser needed at all. If you’re a regular Claude user, it’s worth considering as the cleanest option of all.
Which Method Is Best?
- Edge users — use the More Tools → Apps → Install Claude method for the cleanest experience
- Chrome users — use Save and share → Create shortcut
- Everyone else — the manual desktop shortcut works perfectly well
- Want no browser at all? — download the official Claude desktop app
A Tip for Less Tech-Savvy Users
If you’re setting this up for someone who isn’t very comfortable with computers, the Edge app install method is the best choice. Opening Claude in its own clean window — without browser tabs, bookmarks bars, and navigation buttons around it — makes the whole experience much simpler and less intimidating. Just double-click the icon and you’re straight into Claude. That’s all they need to know.
