Plugins work differently when you have a network site as this is. You need to go to the Network Admin Dashboard to install plugins. You can then go to each of the sites and activate the plugins you need for that site. Avoid the link Network Activate unless you are sure that the plugin can be safely network activated, otherwise you may beak one or more of your sites!

wpBeginner.com has an article on the creation of a site-specific plugin which is a specific place to add snippets of code that you find on the web that performs functions that are not theme related. Normally these code pieces are added to your child theme’s functions.php file. This works fine until you change your theme. A site-specific plugin will serve as the same purpose of your theme’s functions.php file, but it will allow you to retain all these functionality when you are changing themes.
