The Basics of Agentic AI

This entry is part 1 of 7 in the series Exploring Agentic AI

What is agentic AI? Agentic AI refers to an artificial intelligence agent.

This post is part of my Exploring Agentic AI series, where I document my journey into the emerging world of autonomous AI agents. In this first article, I want to define what Agentic AI is and why it’s different from the AI tools many of us already use.

From Reactive to Proactive

Most people are familiar with AI assistants like chatbots or voice-activated helpers. These tools respond to a question or command and stop there. Agentic AI goes a step further: it can take a goal, break it into smaller steps, choose the right tools, and work toward completing the goal with minimal human guidance.

Think of it as the difference between giving a personal assistant a single task versus hiring a project manager who plans the whole project, coordinates the work, and adapts along the way.

Key Characteristics

  • Autonomy: Operates without constant prompting, making decisions and taking action independently.
  • Proactivity: Anticipates needs, opportunities, or problems before they’re raised.
  • Adaptability: Adjusts its approach based on feedback and changing conditions.

Real-World Examples

Business: An AI agent that monitors a company’s supply chain, predicts potential delays, and automatically reroutes orders to avoid stockouts.

Personal: An AI travel planner that, once given your preferences and budget, books flights, hotels, and activities — and updates them automatically if your plans change.

Why It Matters

Agentic AI has the potential to transform how we work and live by handling complex, multi-step tasks that previously required a human’s continuous involvement. For those working on social impact projects, it could be a powerful tool to gather data, coordinate stakeholders, and identify opportunities faster than ever before.

Coming Next

In the next post, I’ll review the book Agentic AI: Harnessing AI Agents to Reinvent Business, Work and Life by Pascal Bornet and colleagues, which offers a structured way to think about this technology and its potential impact.
