• New Possibilities: Autonomous agents can unlock entirely new workflows and partnerships that weren’t feasible with human-only teams.

Challenges

• Trust and Transparency: People need to understand how an agent makes decisions before they will rely on it.
• Data Quality: Poor or biased data can lead to flawed decisions, no matter how advanced the AI.
• Oversight and Governance: Without clear guidelines, autonomous systems could take actions that are legal but socially or ethically questionable.
• Security Risks: Agents with the ability to act on systems or data can become targets for malicious exploitation.
• Change Management: Introducing agentic AI can disrupt existing workflows, requiring careful integration with human teams.

Balancing the Two

To maximize opportunities while minimizing risks, organizations should start small, measure outcomes carefully, and involve diverse stakeholders in the design and governance of agentic AI systems. In my SDG ecosystem project, for example, I can imagine piloting an AI agent to handle specific research or coordination tasks, while keeping human oversight in place until trust is built.
