Speaking/Reading

You can have the iPad read text to you. It will read Notes or web pages and others. How? Go to Settings, Accessibility. Turn on Speak Screen. In your app (Notes, web page etc.) swipe down from the top with two fingers. To stop the voice from speaking, tap the app and press the X.

Control Center

If you swipe down and to the left from the top right corner of you iPad you open the Control Center. It’s very handy for adjusting the volume. You can see that control on the right side half way down. You can also adjust the screen brightness. As you can see below, there’s more.

You can customize your control center to contain other things. How do you do that? Go to Settings, Control Center, and on the right side you will see MORE CONTROLS. Click the green plus sign to add one. Maybe you want to add a Quick Note. That’s handy. Set it up to your liking.

Screenshot

A screenshot is a picture of your screen. How do you take a screenshot of your iPad? If you have a Home button, press the top button and the Home button at the same time. Quickly release both buttons. After you take a screenshot, a thumbnail temporarily appears in the lower-left corner of your screen. Tap the thumbnail to open it or swipe left to dismiss it. Where do you find your screenshots? Open Photos, then go to Albums > Screenshots.

How do you take a screenshot on an iPad without a Home button? Press the top button and either volume button at the same time. Quickly release both buttons. Again, after you take a screenshot, a thumbnail temporarily appears in the lower-left corner of your screen. Tap the thumbnail to open it or swipe left to dismiss it.

To take a screenshot on an iPad by swiping from the bottom left corner, you can:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select General
  3. Select Gestures
  4. Choose Screenshot under the drop-down menu
  5. Turn on Allow Finger to Swipe From Corner
  6. Swipe quickly from the bottom left corner

Create Website Icon/App

To create a website icon on an iPad, do the following and add it to the Home Screen using Safari:

  1. Open the Safari app on your iPad
  2. Go to the website you want to add
  3. Tap the Share button, which looks like a rectangle with an upward-pointing arrow
  4. Tap Add to Home Screen
  5. Choose a name for the shortcut
  6. Click Add

Notes

To more easily move the cursor around the text you have written in a Note. press and hold the space bar. Move your finger to move the cursor around the text. To select a single word of text, double tap the word. You can drag the selectors around and you also have access to the menu of Cut, Copy, Paste, Replace, Format, Find Selection. If you are typing a lot of numbers in Notes you can make it easier to type the number 7 for example by pressing the u key and holding it an swiping down. This saves you from pressing the .?123 key in the lower left.

Keyboard Settings

There are a lot of keyboard settings to be found when you press and hold the emoji key down to access the popup menu. Press Keyboard Settings… Also you can make the keyboard smaller by using the two-finger pinch. You can then go to the bottom of the keyboard and drag that small gray bar around to more the keyboard around. Use the two-finger expansion to get it back to full size.

Locking Into an App

If you are just lending your iPad to a child or friend and you don’t want them leaving that app and looking around your phone you can lock it. How? Go to Settings, Accessibility. Guided Access. At the top of the screen go ahead and enable it if it’s not enabled. Close Settings and go to the app that you are allowing the user to use. Click the top power button three times. Click on Guided Access in the small popup menu. Click Start in the top left. Enter a 4-digit passcode, twice. Remember it. Use the app. To get out of it, triple-click the top button and enter the passcode. Click End.
