FileZilla is open source software distributed free of charge under the terms of the GNU General Public License that has both a client and a server version are available. FileZilla Client is a fast and reliable cross-platform FTP, FTPS and SFTP client with lots of useful features and an intuitive graphical user interface. It is cross-platform and runs on Windows, Linux, *BSD, Mac OS X and more.

FileZilla has IPv6 support, is available in many languages, supports resume and transfer of large files (greater than 4GB), has drag & drop support, directory comparison and more. For example, if you have a website that is hosted on the Internet you will likely have the ability to use FileZilla to connect to your site and work with the files in your site just as you would work with the Windows Explorer. This allows you to backup your site by transferring your sites files to your local computer. You can also upload files to your host’s server.

Download and Install

To download FileZilla, open your browser and go to the website https://filezilla-project.org. Download the version that is compatible with your computer by clicking on the appropriate button, which will probably be the Client version.

Connecting to your Host

There are three pieces of information you will need to be able to connect to your host: Host, Username and Password. The Host is the same thing as the Server. If you log into the CPanel of your host and locate the ftp information you may find that they provide you with the host name (“server”) and your username. If you have an ftp URL you can use that for the host name. If you don’t know your password you might try looking through your emails because host providers send emails to you when you set up your account.
