Energy Consumption KPI

This entry is part 2 of 3 in the series Social Responsibility KPIs

The consumption of energy in the world is increasing and the fossil resources are becoming more limited. Energy prices are on the rise. It makes sense to invest in energy saving projects and renewable energy sources.

Organizations can track energy consumption by looking at energy purchased. Energy suppliers provide the quantities used and the prices. You can collect this data in the way your supplier provides it, either monthly or quarterly.

Since energy consumption varies widely across industries, you can create a benchmark for your own company and then set a target of a percentage reduction each year, all else being equal. You will want to track the costs of the energy as well as the amount of energy. Electricity is expressed in kilo watt hours (kWh). You could also express the energy used and the cost per unit produced.

How much energy does a person consume if they live in a condominium? Here’s an estimate from a simple Google query. In case of apartments, a 950 sq. ft condominium uses approximately 5,605 kWh of electricity per year, which equals to the usage of 467 kWh per month. A kilowatt-hour is 1,000 watts used for one hour. As an example, a 100-watt light bulb operating for ten hours would use one kilowatt-hour.
