Supply Chain Miles KPI

This entry is part 3 of 3 in the series Social Responsibility KPIs

How far does the inputs of production need to travel? Can we buy local or do we need to import the supplies from another country. This depends. There is an environmental impact of shipping goods half way around the world. The food industry was one of the first industries to measure the miles, or kilometers travelled.

Measuring the miles travelled gives companies insights to their environmental impact of their business activities. Google Maps distance calculator may help you with measuring the distance that the good travelled. The costs (time) of doing this can be fairly high, unless you have software to do it for you.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know where the production origin is if you are buying it from a wholesaler.

For more information, The Main KPI Types has a list of some KPIs and their types.
